Life After High School: A New Chapter in Life and a New Roommate

By KFBB News Team

Well it's that time of year again for a new school year to start and over 350 new students moved into their new home away from home at Carroll College.

News Channel 5's Kacey Drescher got a chance to catch up with some of the students as they prepare for life after high school.

When asked what the first word that comes to their minds when they hear the word college, the emotions vary.

“Fun!”
“Probably moving away. “
“Exciting! I’m finally here!”
“Nervous…”
“I don’t know any other way to describe it, it’s just so new.”

New school, new room, a new chapter in life - lots of Tupperware and suitcases - and a new roommate.

“Going away to college for the first time is always a little nerve-wracking and so it’s just a big transition in your life. So the more people you have who know your name, who are welcoming you and asking you questions, about whether you’re doing ok, is there anything we can do to help you? It makes a huge difference in their lives to be able to have those people around and feel welcomed,” says Director of Student Activities at Carroll College, Patrick Harris.

Rebecca and Erin share a love for pre-med, their cell phones and now they'll be calling the same 17 by 12 foot room home.

“She just wanted to be in pre-med, and so did I so we got to talking and realized we had so much in common that we had to be roommates, at least that way we wouldn’t not want to choke eachother!” Giggles freshman Rebecca Jones.

One brought a microwave, the other a fridge and together they're excited to be two of the 340 incoming freshman at Carroll College.

Jones’ roommate Erin Johnson, says “my dad’s been telling me since the fifth grade, you’re going to love college so I’ve been waiting a long time for this! All the experiences and all the stuff I’m going to be learning, just getting my career together and having someone to share a room with cause she’s awesome!”

With their prized possession unpacked the girls are ready to take on college.
Johnson excitedly pulls out her Alice in Wonderland shirt to show her new friend and mentions how important it is to have her purses and phone with her. Jones says she couldn’t handle being here without her laptop.
“I’m excited to learn but scared it won’t be as easy as high-school,” says Jones with a wince.

The first day of classes at Carroll is this Monday.
