MSU-COT Construction Students Break Ground at Low-Income Housing Site

By KFBB News Team

It was a day of groundbreaking today in Great Falls, as MSU-COT construction students kicked off their second partnership with NeighborWorks.

Last year’s inaugural collaboration built the first COT home in Great Falls and this year, they’re doing it again.

NeighborWorks provides the site as well as financing and support for the project, while students have the hands-on opportunity to do everything from the ground up, including excavation, laying the foundation, framing and erecting siding on the home.

The house will then be sold to a qualifying low-income family that students will have the chance to meet.

"It's important to bring them in and have them meet the students and the students to see that this just isn't a house but it's actually a home, and that they're really serving a family in the end, not just building a structure," explains Al Henry, Director of Operations for NeighborWorks.

"I get to build a house, which is a lot of fun for me, and someone else gets a house to live in," says freshman construction student Sam Myles.

The college uses the house as on-the-job training for students in its Carpentry and Construction Trades program.

Officials say they typically select a low-income qualifying family sometime in the late spring.
