MSU Northern Among Schools at Trades Rodeo and Career Fair

By Steve Newton

Around 400 students from across Central Montana braved the cold Wednesday in Great Falls to get an idea of career opportunities available to them at the Trades Rodeo and Career Fair at MSU Great Falls.

"I'm thinking about getting into construction," said Marcus Alvalle, a senior at Great Falls High.

Some students came to the fair knowing what which trade they wanted to focus on, while others were making up their minds.

"I just wanted to get a better look at what kind of classes they have here and what other colleges are offering classes that I might be interested in like carpentry," said Alvalle.

"The welding, that was pretty interesting," said TJ Paulsen, a senior at White Sulphur Springs High. "And that heavy equipment simulator, that was pretty neat."

For the students still mulling their options, booths from local businesses and colleges were available.

"It just gets them a chance to ask some questions," said Erica Rominger, a recruiter with MSU Great Falls. "At least feel out what they want to do for the future and where they want to go to college."

Among the colleges, MSU Northern's Bio-Energy Center showed off different types of biodiesel, a fuel beneficial to the school's Diesel Tech Department.

"The diesel department partnered with us," said Taylor Lyon with MSU Northern's Bio-Energy Center. "We produce the fuel in our biofuel pilot plant, and then they get to run it in the engine dyno, and do the stats and look at the look at the differences in horsepower, fuel economy.

Some students feel their talents will be put to better use outside the office and working in the great outdoors is their calling.

"I don't know, just actually getting out and doing something instead of working with paper," said Paulsen.
