Malmstrom Hosts Warrior Chef Competition

Chefs from Malmstrom AFB showcased their skills Thursday at the Warrior Chef Competition.

Chefs rolled up their sleeves and went from the cutting board to the grill to prepare their best dishes.

This is Senior Airmen Harold Matheny's third time competing. As a chef for the 341st Force Support Squadron, he cooks all over the base. “I like cooking in general, so it's kind of a good fit for me,” he says.

He combined some of his mom's recipes from Alabama with a few new ideas while preparing his meal. “I had some recipes, went through them yesterday throwing some things together and a couple of things worked out,” he explains.

As part of the competition, all the chefs had to use the special ingredient: chicken. “It's something real easy, but we're looking for a wide range of food,” Technical Sergeant Derek Harris says.

Each team of two had 90 minutes to put together their dish. TSgt. Harris says the best part is when the cooking is over. Saying, “My favorite part is the very end when we get to taste test all the competitors’ food.”

Besides walking away with the trophy, SrA Matheny says winning earns you bragging rights. Saying, “It's good camaraderie, it's good competition, it's good fun and you get bragging rights. Everybody wants to be on top, so this is our chance to have bragging rights and talk back to the other chefs while we're on top.”

On top it is for Matheny and his partner, SrA Josue Silva, the pair earned the title of Warrior Chef Champions.
