Montana Adopts New Math & English Standards

Today, the Montana Board of Public Education adopted new standards for English and math.

Superintendent of Public Schools Denise Juneau says they are higher and more clear for Montana’s curriculum.

Montana is now the 46th state to adopt the Common Core Standards.

States and education organizations came together two years ago to decide what students should be able to do in English and math.

Montana took its time to make sure the national standards would work in its K through 12 classrooms.

The new standards provide benchmarks for what students should know in each grade.

Juneau says, "Everywhere from K, 1, 2, 3, all the way up to 12th grade, they're lined out and laid out for parents to take a look at; for students to know what kind of content they're supposed to be learning; and of course, for teachers to know the exact, specific kind of content in each of those areas that they're supposed to be teaching."

Montana will become the only state in the country to integrate American Indian education for all.

An assessment of the standards will be done in 2014.

Why National Standards. They fail overseas, They are limiting. Teachers will simply teach to the test. The bright guys will be bored to tears.
