Montana Farmer Challenging Rehberg For GOP Senate Seat

By KFBB News Team

A new candidate for the U.S. Senate seat up for election in November means Rep. Denny Rehberg will have to face a primary challenge.

On Wednesday, Dennis Teske, a farmer living in the town of Terry almost 190 miles east of Billings, announced that he would seek the Republican nomination. Until that announcement, Rehberg was the only one who announced a run for the U.S. Senate under the GOP flag.

Teske said his priorities are fixing the country's debt problem as well as cutting government regulations.

"We need to come to a place, in our country, where we realize that our country is in peril, and we're watching the demise of it, financially," said Teske, "We can talk about the moral decay, you can talk about a lot of things, but if we lose our country financially, there's no issue to talk about. We need to balance the budget. Not 10 years from today, today. That budget has to be balanced, and we cannot trust politicians."

Teske also proposed to replace the current taxes with a flat tax as well as a national sales tax. Teske also said that he believes the current problems in Washington are caused by politicians who stay in office for too long.

When asked whether he will set a self-imposed term limit, as other politicians have done, Teske did not give a firm answer, but said that he loves his farm and that he is only running in the election because the country is calling for help.

Whoever wins the GOP primary will face incumbent Senator Jon Tester in the November race. The primaries will be held on June 5th, according to the Montana Secretary of State's website.
