New CASA CAN Volunteers Step into Courtroom

When some children aren't able to speak for themselves during trials, one group helps by advocating on the child's behalf.

Today, 10 new CASA CAN volunteers completed their initial training with a mock trial.

Volunteers are court appointed special advocates who will make recommendations about the well being of children during trials.

The group has spent hours in the classroom, but today's experience gave volunteers an idea of what it feels like inside a courtroom taking questions from lawyers and a judge.

“Not very often in real life are they asked to take the stand, but they do definitely stand up in court and tell the judge what they think is in the best interest of the child. They’ve written a court report which backs up all their recommendations,” CASA CAN Executive Director Lisa Goff says.

“It’s a little intimidating. You just relax and speak the truth and it’s easy. It will help me in the way that it isn’t new. I’ve already sat in the chair, talked to a judge, talked to the attorneys. It just breaks that ice making it easier next time,” new volunteer Ron Gonzales says.
