Police Say Stabbing Victim Stabbed With Own Knife: Facing Felony Assault Charge

By KFBB News Team

On Saturday ABC 5 told you about a stabbing outside a Great Falls residence on the south side of town. Today, police are shedding light on the case and it now appears the man who was hospitalized for a stabbing wound to the torso ended up getting stabbed with his own knife.

Great Falls Police say an altercation escalated outside a home at 1605 12th Avenue South Saturday afternoon around 1:30 between two males.

Reports are conflicting between the parties involved, but police say there was a dispute over a relationship. Great Falls Police say 26-year-old James Hopkins attacked another 30-year-old man when he arrived outside the 12th Ave. S home with a woman whom Hopkins had a previous relationship with.

The female involved was punched several times in the face and Hopkins allegedly attacked the 30-year old man with a knife, slashing the tires of the new couple’s car to prevent them from leaving.

Police say at some point during the altercation, Hopkins was stabbed in the chest with his own knife but it is unclear how the stabbing happened at this time.

Hopkins remains in the hospital and underwent surgery Saturday. Police say his condition is unknown and he will most likely stay under medical care for the next couple days.

Although charges are pending, police tell ABC 5 he will be charged with felony assault with a weapon, partner/family member assault and criminal mischief.

ABC 5 spoke with Hopkins about the incident. He tells us he’s not in critical condition and he’s going to be okay. He says he was stabbed in his kidney and although the surgery went well he’s in a lot of pain.

Hopkins goes on to say that he has no idea how the actual stabbing occurred and at first he didn’t even know he had been stabbed - He says the blood just felt like warm water running down him.
