Pork Processing Facility Possibly Coming to MT

By KFBB News Team

Last week, Governor Brian Schweitzer traveled to China and looked at selling Montana products to the country. He found that China has a high demand for pork.

Now, he's looking at building a pork processing plant in Shelby.

The governor says Montana could produce 800,000 pigs at the facility, which would be the equivalent of 70 farms.

Chinese companies would finance the endeavor.

Schweitzer says, “They’re rapidly moving people from the countryside, where they feed themselves, to the cities, where they’re now needing supplies of meat and grain and vegetables and fruit from around the world. Montana is uniquely positioned in that we have excess capacity, and if we have more markets, we can produce more food.”

The governor says the new plant would also create a number of jobs for Montanans.

A Chinese delegation will soon be visiting the Treasure State to further discussions.
