"Subsidy Gusher" Report Released Outside Rehberg's Office

By Kacey Drescher

A bi-partisan national watchdog group has released a report in Helena, detailing subsidies the oil and gas industry receive from American taxpayers.

A small group of demonstrators gathered outside Denny Rehberg's Helena office, as the group Taxpayers for Common Sense Action released a report called "Subsidy Gusher - Taxpayers Stuck with Massive Subsidies While Oil and Gas Profits Soar."

The report describes the nearly $80 billion in subsidies the oil and gas industry will receive over the next five years. According to the group, big oil and gas companies are collecting over $15 billion a year.

Taxpayers for Common Sense say oil and gas companies need to pay their fair share and the group urges citizens to take a stand to eliminate tax breaks.

“We’ve got a $14 trillion dollar debt, we’re running a $1.65 trillion dollar deficit this year, we’ve got to start cutting some of this wasteful spending,” says Steve Ellis, Taxpayers for Common Sense Action Vice President.

“Soaring federal deficits, soaring prices at the pumps, high profit margins for these oil companies, they don’t need big fat paychecks like this from taxpayers,” says Mary Ann Dunwell, a concerned Helena resident.

Demonstrators say Denny Rehberg voted against repealing tax subsidies; we'll have more from Rehberg's office tonight on NewsChannel 5 at 10:00PM.
