Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month Recognized

By KFBB News Team

Today, Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month was commemorated at the state capitol.

Attorney General Steve Bullock was on hand to stress Montana's commitment to keeping kids safe.

The Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence recently unveiled a statewide prevention plan to fight sexual violence by focusing on young people and encouraging healthy relationships.

In 2009, more than 9% of Montana teens reported abuse by their boyfriend or girlfriend.

Bullock says, “Let's make sure that we're giving that message out to teenagers that the jealousy; that's not affection; control; that's not love; sexual coercion isn’t acceptable ever.”

Research has shown that teen dating violence can lead to higher risk of substance abuse, unhealthy weight tendencies, and un-intentional pregnancy.
