Wild Bison Debate Continues in Montana

By KFBB News Team

The debate is heating up over whether to let wild bison roam free in Montana. An initial hearing over two lawsuits is scheduled for Wednesday.

A judge is being asked to decide whether bison should be considered free roaming wildlife or kept out of Montana to protect private property and public safety.

Deep snows last winter caused more than a thousand bison from Yellowstone National Park to spill into the state. Montana usually kills bison which escape the park, but the large number last year ended the long standing practice. Making some cattle owners and nearby city leaders angry.

Many of those bison were captured and taken back to the park in the spring. During the last major migration in 2008, 1,600 Yellowstone bison were killed - about a third of the park's total.

The government should not be catering to ranchers. They are only a fraction of voters.
