YWCA to Upgrade Building

By KFBB News Team

Helena's YWCA has plans to update its almost 100 year old facility.

It will cost $2.6 - 2.8 million dollars to restore the YWCA.

The transitional housing building was built in 1918 and is in need of quite a few repairs.

The organization houses homeless women and their daughters and helps them get back on their feet.

The money will go towards plumbing and wiring, as well as reconfiguring rooms and building a new kitchen.

Despite having 33 rooms to house women, last year, there was still a waiting list of 17 people.

Kellie McBride, YWCA Executive Director, says, “If you have 17 homeless women on your waiting list, there’s a problem in the community, and luckily, we do work in a community where we all come together to make sure that a woman is safe until we can get her in here.”

Building renovations will begin in March of 2013 and will take about 6 - 9 months to complete.

During those months, they'll also need to relocate the women who are in the building at that time.
