AT&T pushes up cell service for Mont.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — AT&T has moved up its timetable for offering iPhone compatible cell phone service in Montana.

Company spokeswoman Sandy Goldberg says AT&T expects to take over Alltel service in Montana by the end of the year or early next year, with about the same coverage area as Alltel has right now.

Verizon Wireless announced in January 2009 that it would buy Alltel, but federal regulators required Verizon to sell some Alltel assets in markets where competition was lacking, including Montana.

AT&T initially projected that its service would be available in Montana in mid-2011, but Goldberg says replacing Alltel's technology has gone faster than expected.

Alltel's existing customers will receive new phones comparable to their existing phones at no cost, or they can pay extra to upgrade to the iPhone.
