Cascade County officials OK permit for power plant

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — Cascade County officials have approved a special-use permit for a planned natural gas-fired power plant east of Great Falls.

The Great Falls Tribune reports the county Zoning Board of Adjustments voted 5-0 Friday to approve the permit.

The special-use permit is the final approval Southern Montana Electric Generation & Transmission Cooperative needs to begin construction on the $125 million project. The first phase calls for 46 megawatts of output by June 2011. Eventually, SME plans to generate 120 megawatts.

The special-use permit was needed after the state Supreme Court ruled in July that the county illegally rezoned agricultural land for industrial use so the plant could be built.
