"Call of the Wild" being filmed near Lincoln

MISSOULA - The filming of a modern adaptation of Jack London's short novel about a sled dog, "Call of the Wild," is under way in southwestern Montana.

Christopher Lloyd plays a grandpa in the film. Lloyd played the eccentric Doc Brown in the "Back to the Future" movies. Director Richard Gabai of California says "Call of the Wild" is a low-budget movie with, quote, "a big heart and a big scope."

Crews filmed the restart of the Race to the Sky sled dog race near Lincoln on Sunday. They'll also be shooting near Philipsburg. Other cast members include Timothy Bottoms, Veronica Cartwright, Wes Studi and Jaleel White. Gabai says a cameo appearance is planned by Joyce DeWitt, who played alongside Suzanne Sommers and John Ritter in the TV sitcom "Three's Company."

The crew expects to be in Montana for the next several weeks. Shooting is expected to be finished in the spring, with a release date sometime next winter.
