Rain Helps and Hurts Firefighters

BILLINGS - While some might assume Wednesday's rain is a blessing for our dry conditions, firefighters say it's a double-edged sword.

Lockwood Fire Chief Bill Rash says an initial rain is great news, but he says if it's just one big downpour, it will only serve to increase fire danger. He says what really needs to happen is strategic rain spread out from now into the fall.

Rash says because of lack of precipitation lately fires are popping up at times never seen before. "Right now its just one of those deals where it could happen at anytime twelve months out of the year so its an uneasy feeling.

You never know, the conditions are right or wrong depending on how you look at it. Were going to have to deal with it," said Chief Rash. The fire risk in Lockwood was downgraded to moderate because of Wednesday's showers.
