MISSOULA - Authorities have released the name of a Corvallis man who was killed in a rafting accident on the East Fork of the Bitterroot River south of Darby. The victim was 53-year-old David Dedmon.

The Ravalli County sheriff says it happened about 2 p.m. Sunday, when a raft carrying Dedmon and his wife, Sharon, hit some debris in the water and flipped over. Sheriff Chris Hoffman says Sharon Dedmon was pulled to safety, and David was later recovered in the Rocky Knob area along U.S. Highway 93 South.

An ambulance took the couple to Marcus Daly Hospital in Hamilton, where David Dedmon was pronounced dead. His wife was treated for minor injuries and released. According to the sheriff's office, Dedmon was a former Ravalli County peace officer and an experienced river guide.
