BOZEMAN - The History Channel's "Modern Marvels" program will televise a story this fall filmed at Montana State University on how molds and fungi can both help and hurt people.

The show's producer said she was drawn to MSU because of research by plant scientist Gary Strobel, whose work finding medicinally important fungi within plants has led to cancer-fighting compounds, antibiotics and other bioactive compounds.

About 10% to 15% of the endophytic fungi that Strobel has collected have shown antibiotic activity. The program will also use footage from the MSU-produced video, "Jewels of the Jungle." It is expected to air in late September.
