MISSOULA - The state wildlife department says a Sula-area rancher shot and killed a wolf that he caught chasing his cattle.

The male wolf was one of four wolves that were chasing cattle early Tuesday on a ranch in the East Fork of the Bitterroot River. The state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks confirmed it was a legal shooting.

FWP wolf management specialist Liz Bradley says the wolf was likely a member of the Trail Creek pack. Bradley says it was the first confirmed case of that pack threatening livestock. The pack will be monitored, but no other wolves will be killed.
