Woman pleads guilty in school embezzlement case

By The Associated Press

KALISPELL - A former Kalispell school employee accused of embezzling school activity money has pleaded guilty.

Forty-five-year-old Cynthia Upwall appeared in District Court on Thursday and pleaded to felony theft. Flathead County Attorney Ed Corrigan says Upwall has admitted stealing $17,500. Auditors verified that about $15,000 in school funds were missing.

The Kalispell School District hired Upwall in 1999. She was the Flathead High School activities bookkeeper for six years, and held that job at Glacier High School when it opened last fall.

Upwall told the court she stole money between 2003 and 2007. Defense attorney Lane Bennett says Upwall has returned more than $14,000. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 20.
