Missoula mayor wants lighting on bridge

MISSOULA - Missoula Mayor John Engen says the Orange Street Bridge, spanning the Clark Fork River, needs illumination and the state should turn on the lights.

The bridge has them, but it's been a couple of years since the bulbs were replaced. A city official says that with some lights shining brightly and others remaining dark, the overall effect was not good, so Missoula told the state Transportation Department to turn them off if problems could not be addressed.

Transportation spokeswoman Charity Watt Levis says the agency used to spend $150 to $200 on each replacement bulb, and the expense became considerable. She says the department will work with Missoula officials to reach an agreement about lights. Engen's request to turn them on came in response to call from a Missoula resident.
