104 get layoff notices at Montana Tunnels Mine

HELENA - The Montana Tunnels metal mine near Jefferson City has issued 60-day layoff notices to about 90% of its remaining work force. That's because lower commodities prices and the global credit crisis have made it difficult to find investors.

Tim Smith is the mine's general manager. He says 104 workers received layoff notices late last month. That will leave a skeleton crew of around 11 employees to perform maintenance, environmental and administrative duties as the operation is effectively idled.

Running at full capacity last year, the mine employed more than 200 people and was one of the top three corporate taxpayers in Jefferson County. The mine laid off 82 employees in February.
