Trooper hospitalized in critical condition

By The Associated Press

KALISPELL - A Montana Highway Patrol trooper was hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday, a day after being injured in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 93 south of Kalispell.

A spokeswoman at Kalispell Regional Medical Center says Trooper Mike Haynes was being treated in the intensive care unit. The Department of Justice says a 29-year-old man was driving his car northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck the trooper's car head-on at about 2:40 a.m. Monday. Flathead County Coroner Pete Wingert says the man died in the crash. His name hasn't been released.

Haynes, 28, was sworn in as a trooper in August 2006 and is stationed in Kalispell.
