BOZEMAN - Authorities say a 51-year-old Livingston man is dead after crashing his car into a tree between Emigrant and Pray.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Pat McLaughlin says James Hutchings was driving on East River Road at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when he apparently drifted off the road and into a ditch before slamming into a tree.

Hutchings was the only one in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the accident. McLaughlin says Hutchings was wearing a seat belt, but the impact was so severe that he could not have survived it.

It is unclear if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, but speed is suspected to have played a role.
