Cut Bank jail opening soon

CUT BANK - A new $2.3 million, 25-bed jail will open soon in Cut Bank, relieving overcrowding and the threat of an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit over jail conditions.

Glacier County Undersheriff Jeff Fauque says the new jail can hold 17 more prisoners than the old jail and has a basketball court, a visitor's area, a garage and a new dispatch center that is also the master control room for the jail.

Voters had been asked to support a bond for a new jail four times, dating back to 1996. The bond was approved in 2006. Glacier County Commissioner Mike DesRosier says the new jail will allow officers to catch up on a backlog of cases and offer residents peace of mind that the sheriff's office can lock up all criminals.

The jail is scheduled to open on May 18.
