HELENA - The Superior Ranger District is inviting public comment about how to use 30 miles of old rail trail between St. Regis and Idaho.

A meeting to discuss management of the old Milwaukee Road tracks takes place Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the St. Regis School. The route has been used by bikers, skiers, dog sledders, ATVers and snowshoers since it shut down in 1977.

Lolo National Forest now owns about 30 miles of the rail trail, which is known as the "Hiawatha Trail." The Missoula-based Five Valleys Land Trust has also bought sections of the route, which it plans to turn over to public management.

Superior District Ranger Sharon Sweeney says she would like to see a draft management plan for the tracks by October.
