Helena man dies after crashing into police car

HELENA - Authorities say a 58-year-old Helena man Died, apparently of unrelated medical problems, after he crashed his pickup truck into a police car over the weekend.

Helena Police Chief Troy McGee says Gerald Lee Billington was driving erratically on Montana Avenue before the crash Saturday night. No officers were injured in the wreck, which caused minor damage.

The chief says Billington seemed confused when officers pulled him over. He died later at a hospital.

About 40 minutes before the crash, police received a call that Billington was slumped over in his truck in a parking lot. McGee says the man told officers he was tired, and he did not appear to be intoxicated.

Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson says an inquest will probably be held because Billington technically was in police custody when he died.
