KALISPELL - Glacier National Park officials say the historic Going-to-the-Sun Road is expected to open from both directions over Logan Pass by the end of the week.

The road should open up to the pass from the west side by midday Thursday, and it is expected to open from the east side by midday Friday. Last year, the Sun Road opened July 2.

Recent snowfall and wet weather have delayed paving a section of road near the East Tunnel that was damaged during a November 2006 rainstorm. But Glacier Superintendent Chas Cartwright says, weather permitting, the road will be open over Logan Pass on Friday even if the paving is not complete.

The park's free Sun Road shuttle system is expected to be in operation by July 1.
