AG issues opinion on hospital districts

HELENA - Attorney General Steve Bullock says that county commissioners may levy mills to support new county hospital districts.

The formal attorney general opinion carries the weight of law until a court overturns it or the Legislature changes it. The opinion settles a question over whether such taxes can come even if no mills had previously been levied for that purpose.

Bullock issued the opinion is response to questions raised by Granite County Commissioners about a new countywide hospital district created there in 2008.

Bullock says the 2001 Legislature made law changes aimed at giving commissioners the authority to adjust hospital district budgets as needed.
