Inquest scheduled in Broadus shooting

HELENA - A coroner's inquest jury will investigate details of a fatal shooting by the Powder River County sheriff.

On May 18, Sheriff John Blain shot and killed 59-year-old John T. Andrew of Wilsall after responding to a trespassing call at a ranch near Broadus. Authorities have kept a tight lid on details, saying only that the sheriff found Andrew in an equipment shed, armed with a handgun, and shot him after Andrew brandished the weapon.

State law requires a coroner's inquest be held when a person dies as the result of an act by a law enforcement officers or while in law enforcement custody.

The Powder River County Attorney Jeffrey Noble says acting county coroner Lance Silha will hold an inquest Sept. 16. The jury will help determine if the shooting was justified.

It's to bad that a law man shoots a person first and then asks questions later. Should he have gave a warning shot first? I have known John for 45yrs. The wepon he had was a black powder pistol witch has to be cocked before fireing so law enforcement should have seen the type of weapon and known the operation of it. John would be alive today if the Sheriff would have taken a few moments to assess the situation.
