HELENA - A federal grant will help 22 school districts across the state replace buses with inefficient diesel engines with buses that meet current emission and performance standards.

The Environmental Protection Agency awarded $1.73 million to the state Department of Environmental Quality, which has awarded a total of $1.5 million for new buses, which cost around $100,000 each.

The grant pays for half the cost, with the district picking up the other half. The old buses must be pulled from service and sent for recycling.

The communities getting new buses are: Anaconda, Browning, Charlo, Clinton, Columbia Falls, Darby, East Helena, Great Falls, Hardin, Harlem, Harrison, Laurel, Libby, Polson, Rocky Boy, Ronan, Roundup, Shields Valley, Stevensville, Troy, Wibaux and Frontier near Wolf Point.

Clinton is replacing four buses, Browning and East Helena are replacing three while Columbia Falls and Libby are getting two new buses.
