KALISPELL - A former chief of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department has pleaded not guilty to stealing over $13,000 from the department.

Robert W. Kienas Sr., pleaded not guilty to one count of felony theft during his arraignment in District Court on Oct. 22.

Prosecutors say the 50-year-old Kienas misappropriated donations by writing checks to himself, altering deposit slips to get cash back and making cash withdrawals from a department bank account from 2005 through 2007. Kienas was chief from 2001 through 2007.
