Charges added in Great Falls area pedestrian fatal

By The Associated Press

GREAT FALLS - A former reserve deputy with the Cascade County Sheriff's office who is accused in a fatal hit-and-run accident faces an additional charge that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Jason Caughey, who also was chief of the Gore Hill volunteer fire department, is accused of running into 21-year-old Sasha Holt, who was walking on Fox Farm Road just outside of Great Falls on July 1. Investigators say they think Caughey drove away and Holt was hit by a second vehicle within minutes.

In September, the 38-year-old Caughey pleaded not guilty to leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury. He pleaded not guilty Thursday to amended felony charges that now include vehicular homicide while under the influence, which was filed with an alternative count of negligent homicide.

Caughey's trial is set for February.
