BILLINGS - U.S. Sen. Max Baucus says he has urged federal environmental officials to list a former copper refinery and smelter near Great Falls as a federal Superfund site.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer last month asked the Environmental Protection Agency to list the site, kicking off a process that could lead to federal cleanup funds for the former Anaconda Mineral Co. plant in Black Eagle.

An estimated 375 homes in the community have yards contaminated with lead and arsenic. In a letter to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson, Baucus said the contamination was unacceptable.
