2 girls killed, 2 injured along Montana roadside

By The Associated Press

MISSOULA - Authorities say two teenage girls were killed and two others were injured when they were hit by a pickup truck as they walked along a highway near East Missoula.

Missoula County Sheriff Mike McMeekin says the girls, all freshmen at Hellgate High School, were hit at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday. He says they were walking eastbound on Highway 200 when a truck driven by 29-year-old David James Delsignore, of Clinton, also headed east, struck them.

According to McMeekin, Delsignore is being held in the Missoula County Jail, and he faces two counts of negligent homicide and two counts of negligent vehicular assault. Delsignore is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday.

Authorities have not released the girls' names. The conditions of the two girls who were hospitalized were not available Sunday.

Drinking an driving is so very wrong, its almost always a deadly combo, an yes he should be held accountable for his actions. ALSO I agree with Anonymous , why are these young people out walking on the highway at midnight , Where are there parents??. Who let these girls do this? 14 or 15 year old girls should not be walking up an down a highway in the middle that to is a deadly combo

Many mistakes made here. I know DelSignore and he is a good man who made very poor choices. It is terrible that 2 high school freshmen walking along a highway at midnight lost their lives. Nothing can replace what their families have lost.

I know one thing. He should go to AA, etc. and soberly deal with his actions,I went to AA and it helped me ALOT. I did not kill anyone ,the reverse, but I could have.

to Anonymous 7:42 - I do not lay blame on the girls. The BLAME is on the driver who was drunk, talking on a cell and driving. This information was not in the original article written at the time I posted, so you possibly had inside information. I said it was BAD JUDGEMENT - and that is true. It is not wise to be walking along a highway in the dark - young or old. I blame the driver - but hope that other teens will learn from this sad event.

To anonymous 3:51. He WAS drinking. And for you to attempt to lay any of the blame on these girls is ludricous. He drove OFF the road and hit them. The ONLY one to blame for this tragedy is the fool that drove impaired and took the lives of innocent people. Put the blame where it belongs - there is no scapegoat here.

Matt - I guess we can assume he was drinking but the article does not state that. And I agree - why were 4 young girls out walking on the highway at almost midnight? This sounds like a combination of bad judgement on both sides leading to a very sad ending. My condolences to the families affected.

Not defending the driver, but what were 4 freshmen doing walking on the highway at midnight?

Should I assume that Delsignore is being held in jail, he was under the influence? Very sad situation.

I know all of these girls. And love them to death. I used to be best friends with one of the girls who died, and one who still lives. The other two, I have grown fondly of. They are both lovely young ladies, and I miss them all. Your friends from - Hellgate High.
