MISSOULA - Authorities say charges might not be filed against a woman who struck and killed a 69-year-old man with her car on U.S. Highway 93 near Wye northwest of Missoula.

Montana Highway Patrol trooper Paul Pfau says the woman's car hit Peter Liberti of Evaro at about 7 p.m. Monday as he was walking across the highway. The woman says she thought she hit a deer and continued up the highway to her home in Arlee.

Pfau says it wasn't until a member of the woman's family drove into Missoula and saw emergency vehicles in the area that the woman realized what happened.

Chief Deputy Missoula County Attorney Kirsten Pabst says she is working with Pfau to determine if charges should be filed. Pfau says Liberti was wearing dark clothing when he walked across the highway to see if someone could jump-start his vehicle.
