BLM examines Montana grazing allotments

GREAT FALLS - The Bureau of Land Management has launched an environmental assessment of 99 grazing allotments in Meagher, Cascade, Teton, Lewis and Clark and Pondera counties.

Willy Frank, who heads the Lewistown field office, says the reviews happen periodically before leases are renewed to make sure leaseholders are meeting standards that protect the land, water and air quality.

The allotments span 64,000 acres of public land. Franks says that based on preliminary evaluations, 25 of the leaseholders aren't meeting rangeland health standards. In 13 of the cases, livestock grazing is a significant factor.

The BLM is holding open house meetings over the next few weeks in Martinsdale, Augusta, White Sulfur Springs, Great Falls and Cascade to give the public a chance to ask questions or present concerns about grazing leases.
