Waste rock to be capped at Highland Mine

By The Associated Press

BUTTE - The Montana Department of Environmental Quality says it plans to complete the Highland Mine reclamation project this summer with $500,000 in federal funding.

Department reclamation specialist Pebbles Clark says a waste rock pile on two acres the agency plans to clean is close to Basin Creek. She says that makes the site south of Butte a high priority to protect Basin Creek from further contamination.

The rock pile is contaminated with arsenic and mercury. Clark says the rock will be consolidated and capped with clean topsoil and planted with native vegetation.
