Carroll Football Preps Eastern Oregon, Round 2

By Dominic Shelden

They are still on top of the Frontier Conference standings like most years, but unlike most years the Saints have lost a conference home game. And even though it was just in their second game, it's still fresh in everyone's mind.

"Defensively we lost it. We gave up five straight drive possessions of 80 yards or longer that turned into touchdowns. And that ended up being the difference in the game," says Carroll head coach Mike Van Diest.

"At times we killed ourselves, and at times they did what they needed to do to make plays. And Ultimately that won the game in the end," Says Carroll senior receiver Matt Ritter.

One of the nice things about Conference play, is Carroll gets to face each team twice. That means a rematch with the Eastern Oregon squad they lost to.

"It's a big thing for this team to come out and rise to the occasion. It's a big game, and of course every game is a big game. But this one in particular since they beat us last time here," says Ritter.

"Every week we play is the biggest game we've play. But I'm not going to lie...last time we played those guys, I was kind of looking forward to playing them again. We look forward to every game we play, but this one just means a little bit more to us since those guys got us last time. So we have a chance...I wouldn't say to get revenge, but to prove to everyone in the conference and prove to ourselves that we're the best team on the field there," says Senior offensive lineman Zach Zosel.

Defensively the Saints look to keep Mountaineers quarterback Chris Ware under control.

"The biggest thing we have to do is just contain him and get pressure on him. We had one sack the first game, and that was on a scramble. We didn't force him out of the pocket, we didn't force him into bad throws. He completed 80% of his passes. We really just didn't disrupt his timing," say Van Diest.

And on offense, it'll be about making sure the little things get done.

"Get first downs, not put the punt team on the field. I think we just need to play an all-around game. We haven't played an all-around game yet...and the best is yet to come," says Zosel.
