Helena native earns spot in National Golden Gloves semifinals

George Lane IR Staff Photographer - Helena boxer Duran Caferro, 19, will compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Houston on Monday for a chance to represent the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

5/8/08 GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. Duran Caferro, Jr. decisioned Omar Pena in the quarterfinals of the National Golden Gloves Thursday night. Caferro, a native of Helena and the Rocky Mountain Regional champion, won the bout with Pena 3-2 and will fight Eric Fowler of Texas in the semifinals Friday night. Caferro is ranked fifth in the country at 125 pounds, but is fighting at the lightweight limit of 132 pounds. The winner will fight for the National Golden Gloves Championship Saturday against the winner of Fidel Maldonado and Michael Perez.
