Lady Argos win 4 straight in Arizona

By KFBB Sports_Team

Tucson, AZ – After closing out yesterday’s action with back-to-back wins, the University of Great Falls softball team kept the momentum rolling as they swept both games today, winning 5-3 over Calumet College of St. Joseph (IN) and 14-10 in a barnburner against Purdue University-North Central (IN) on a bright and sunny day at Lincoln Park. With the wins, the Lady Argos improve to 7-5 on the young season.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start but we picked it up nicely and came up with two quality wins,” said UGF head coach Gary Ehnes. “We were able to come from behind to beat Calumet and did the same against Purdue-North Central after we gave up an early lead in that game. It’s good to know that girls don’t get down on themselves when things go bad. We just keep plugging along and eventually good things will happen.”

The Lady Argos found themselves down 3-1 heading into their half of the fifth inning against Calumet. That’s when second baseman Micaela Kurth (Boise, ID) led off the inning with her second home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Right fielder Anna Owen (Toledo, WA) then reached base on an error, promptly stole second and scored on a Crusader error, evening the score at 3-3. Pinch runner Tina Raynor (Spokane, WA) scored the go-ahead run when sophomore Emily Graham (Calgary, AB) had a pinch hit-single to left.

The Lady Argos would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on another Crusader error, their fifth of the game.

UGF jumped out to a 5-0 lead and appeared as if they’d sail past Purdue-North Central later in the day. PNC had other thoughts though as they responded with seven unanswered runs, getting four in the home half of the third and three more in the fourth.

The Lady Argos regained control as they erupted for an eight-run fifth inning, scoring seven unearned runs as they capitalized on some PNC mistakes. All seven of the unearned runs came with two outs in the inning.

“That’s certainly what you want to see out of your ball club,” said Ehnes. “We gave them some runs and we came right back with a big two out-rally.”

All-in-all, UGF pounded out 16 hits in the game, led by Owen who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, which came on her first home run of the season in the first inning. Desiree Clark (Whitefish, MT) picked up a big two RBI-single in a pinch-hitting role and she scored twice as well. Amanda Morris (Great Falls, MT) was 2-of-4 with two runs scored and an RBI from her leadoff position.

The Lady Argos are back in action with three more contests tomorrow before closing out their portion of the 2010 Tucson Invitational on Saturday.
