Lady Argos win on day 6 at Tuscon Invite

By KFBB Sports_Team

Tucson, AZ – Junior Lindsay Cline (Helena, MT) came up with one of the best pitching performances of her career as she led the University of Great Falls Lady Argonauts to a 2-1 victory under the lights at Lincoln Park against Judson University (IL) to cap off their sixth day of competition at the 2010 Tucson Invitational. The win was the Lady Argos’ second of the day against one loss, running their overall record to 9-6. UGF had their four-game winning streak snapped by Jamestown College (ND) to open the day losing 11-2 in five innings before rebounding with a 9-1 win over Cardinal Stritch University.

Cline retired the first eight batters she faced in the nightcap against Judson. She went the distance keeping a good hitting Judson team at bay for most of the night. Her only indiscretion was an inside-the-park home run surrendered to Kristin Krueger in the sixth inning. For the game, Cline allowed one run on four hits while walking only one and striking out eight. She also induced 11 ground ball outs throughout the contest.

“Lindsay gave us a huge lift today,” said UGF head coach Gary Ehnes. “She pitched well for us in relief earlier in the day against Jamestown and she pitched a gem against Judson who came into the game with a 6-1 record on the season. We also made some real good defensive plays behind her. This is our biggest win of the season thus far.”

The Lady Argos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Amanda Morris (Great Falls, MT) led off the game with a single and later scored on a double by Anna Owen (Toledo, WA). Owen was then cashed in by Jenna Rosenberg (Othello, WA) who singled.

In their earlier win against Cardinal Stritch, the Lady Argos turned two big double plays en route to the shortened win which came in six innings due to the invitational’s eight-run mercy rule. The highlight of the game though came in the first when the Lady Argos turned a triple play. With runners on first and second, the Wolves’ Kayla Schlegel (New Berlin, WI) grounded to UGF’s Brittanie Thibodeaux (Lake Stevens, WA) who promptly stepped on third for a force out and then threw the first forcing out Schlegel. Rosenberg, playing first then tagged the Wolves’ Brittany Rader (New Berlin, WI) who attempted to return to first, unsuccessfully. According to Ehnes, it was the first triple play in the history of the fourth-year program.

Casey Olson (Freeman, WA) went the distance in the circle and scattered seven hits while allowing just one earned run and she struck out six. Freshman Samantha Kramer (Patterson, CA) led the Lady Argos at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Shortstop Jenn Andrews (Spokane, WA) added two RBIs and Thibodeaux added a 2-for-3 effort from the plate.

The Lady Argos conclude their portion of the invitational tomorrow with games against Robert Morris University and Iowa Wesleyan.
