Ryan Newman's Baseball Voyage Lands him in Great Falls

By Tom Wylie

It's sometimes hard to spot Ryan Newman among his players.

Just 32 years old, and not even a decade removed from his days as a player, Newman takes over as the new manager of the Great Falls Voyagers.

He steps into the role previously held by popular manager Chris Cron; and returning players believe Newman won't skip a beat.

"Cron was a great coach, one of my favorite managers," said Voyagers outfielder Randall Thorpe. "Newman is great too, I had him down in extended (spring training). They're both good baseball minded type guys."

Newman's passion for baseball started as a young boy, hanging around his father Jeff, an All-Star catcher for the Oakland Athletics.

"I was born into the game," said Newman. "I don't know if any different. And now I get a chance to continue to come to the ballpark every day - you can't complain about that."

And with his passion, enthusiasm and reverence for the game - Newman has won the respect of those around him.

"I think he's doing a good job," said Voyagers hitting coach Brian Drahman who had previously served under Cron. "In the developmental stage right here, he gets things across that the players need to know."
