Derek Opina

After leaving his native Orange County/Los Angeles in beautiful Southern California, Derek can't wait to explore all of what Montana has to offer!

Derek joined KFBB as the Helena Sports Reporter in September 2012, but graduated from California State University, Fullerton in 2010 (GO TITANS!!!). During that time Derek served as Sports Director for an award winning sports show he started called "Titan Sports Recap." The show aired on local TV in Orange County.

Derek primarily covered the Los Angeles Lakers for LakersNation.com but also reported on the L.A. Galaxy, Angels, prep sports and NCAA D-I athletics (just about every college sport). He's interviewed some of the biggest names in the sports world, including Kobe Bryant, David Beckham, Bruce Bowen, Pau Gasol, Landon Donovan, Warren Sapp, Michael Irvin, Jerry Rice, Dr. J and many, many more. The greatest moment of his young sports career was covering the 2010 NBA Finals between the Lakers and Celtics. There is nothing like covering history!

Derek also interned for the FOX, ABC and CBS affiliates in Los Angeles and hopes to return one day. When Derek isn't working he secretly hopes to run into Phil Jackson while still in Montana. Other than that, he loves cooking, working out and exploring Montana. Derek is a proud member of the Asian American Journalist Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.

The search warrant was part of an investigation involving multiple burglaries and trafficking of stolen property, and yielded many stolen items, including air compressors, wielding equipment, a bag of yarn, and miscellaneous tools.

    SPOKANE, Wash. - A 44-year-old man is recovering after he was shot in the leg near Brown and Riverside in Spokane earlier Thursday morning at the Lion's Lair Bar. The victim was actually a bouncer at the Lion's Lair and the shooting followed an altercation inside the bar. Police are currently looking for two suspects who fled the scene.

    COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho. - The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department responded to a structure fire just after 6am Thursday morning at a two-story commercial building in the 1400 block of N. Lincoln Way at Linden. When they arrived at the office building they could see smoke coming up through the roof.
