Survey Finds Increase of Elk in Bitterroot Valley

Posted: Updated:

An aerial survey by Montana officials has found an increase in the number of elk in the Bitterroot Valley. This year's spring count  found more than 7,300  elk in the five hunting districts surrounding the Bitterroot Valley. Mike Thompson of Montana Fish, Wildlife and
Parks says it's the fourth highest number of elk counted in the 48-year history of the annual survey. Well if you're wondering where the spike is coming from, Thompson says the bolstered numbers are a result of an increase in calf survival, especially in the southern part of the valley.
