Update From Yesterday's Shooting After Attempted Burglary

An update from yesterday's shooting death that took place in Helena after an attempted home invasion when went awry.

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton telling ABC 5 that no charges will be filed against the homeowner who fired shots at an intruder.  The resident was identified as 66 year-old James Stiffler.

Sheriff Leo Dutton also confirming that they have been finding evidence that links the intruder to and this attempted burglary to at least seven other reported burglaries that have occurred in the Helena area recently.  The intruder's identity still has not been released at this time.

Yesterday a shooting occurring at a residence on Canyon Ferry Road, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office reported a homeowner called in about an intruder inside the residence.

The intruder was reportedly confronted by the homeowner resulting in shots being fired by the homeowner and wounding the intruder.

The intruder then fled in the homeowner's vehicle and drove into a chain link fence and was declared dead on the scene.

Even with no charges Sheriff Dutton says the investigation is still ongoing.
