Be Leery of Disaster Charity Scams

Posted: Updated:

Representatives from the Better Business Bureau say many people in the community want to help, and the easiest way from afar, is to donate money.  Yet, just because you may be eager to help and donate right away, doing your research on charities is even more important following a disaster.  You can reach out to organizations like the Red Cross.

Chelsea Maguire, with the Better Business Bureau, says, "if you are interested in supporting and donating to a cause, do your research. Maybe contact a local group that you know and trust, a local charity. Ask for recommendations of who to donate to, and knowing that the money will go to the people who need it."

Billings Police Chief, Rich Saint John, says it becomes illegal when the scammers successfully obtain your money.  If they don't and you believe the charity is questionable, report it and the case will be investigated.
