Explosive Device Turns Out to be a Hoax

Posted: Updated:

Toole County Sheriff Donna Whitt issued a press release saying that shortly before 11 a.m. a citizen called the sheriff's office saying he found what appeared to be a homemade improvised explosive device near Interstate 15.  I-15 was closed from about one o'clock this afternoon to about 4:30 p.m. as authorities investigated.

Assisting on the matter is Malmstrom Air Force Base's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit.  They declared the device safe and collected it as evidence.  The suspicious device appears to be a realistic hoax device and not a real explosive.

The incident is under investigation by Toole County Sheriff's Department, Montana Highway Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI, among other agencies.
