Verizon Customer? The Government Has Your Phone Records!

Posted: Updated:

There are nearly 100 million Verizon Wireless customers and for years the government has been collecting records of those U.S. citizens. It's done under the warrantless surveillance program started under the Bush administration and continues under the Patriot Act.

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee says the court order that allows the collection of the data is reviewed every 90 days and it has saved lives.  The court order allows for the collection of phone logs, length of calls, and geographic locations

In May of 2011 President Obama signed a four-year extension of the key provisions of the Patriot Act. Critics say it's a huge government over-reach and the tip of the iceberg.

The White House says the court order does not allow the government to listen in on phone calls, but some lawmakers say this provision should be thrown out all together.
